The Ted Ellis Trust has a rare and exciting opportunity to train and employ an individual looking to pursue a career in conservation to work alongside the warden at Wheatfen Nature Reserve for 12 months to learn and develop the skills and knowledge required to look after this unique Broadland site.
Situated just east of Norwich, Wheatfen in Surlingham is one of the most significant and well-studied wetland nature reserves in Britain. One of the Trust’s main aims is to preserve Wheatfen’s rich and fragile ecology, but above all, it wants to keep its land and wildlife accessible for the enjoyment and education of children, students and everyone interested in nature.
The Trainee Warden will assist the current warden in the organising and carrying out site management and practical conservation tasks; to be a focal point for visitors to Wheatfen and undertake a range of public engagement activities; and to actively support and work with volunteers to assist in the overall site management. Day to day activities will include undertaking a wide range of practical work such as path maintenance, dyke clearance, fen mowing, bridge and boardwalk maintenance, tree and scrub management, building maintenance and site signage.
For an informal discussion about the role, please contact the Wheatfen Warden, Will Fitch, on 01508 538036 or email at email@example.com.
